In 2012 I challenged myself with crossing the NJ Pine Barrens. This appears to be a simple task in what is the most densely populated state in the US. This 1.1 million acres of National Reserve is located across 7 counties almost central to NYC and Philadelphia, home to very little inhabitable land or infrastructure. As John McPhee describes in his book The Pine Barrens, this sparsely populated area can be explored by vehicle but the roads are very rugged and not always on the map.
I work with different ways of learning the land. Autonomous Drone flights, Four Wheel Drive vehicles, dirtbikes and hiking. Each of these means of transportation yeild different results, however the goal is still to connect the areas outside this preserve.
